One Door Down : Profiles from a New York City Apartment Building During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Mary's Instruments and Tape Recorder Transcript

George: Mary liked music, she wasn’t a great musician, but she liked to dabble with the mandolin, guitar, she played the accordion, we had a piano and downstairs we still have an organ. And actually, it’s a nice organ, it’s got two levels, it has the foot pedals and stuff like that, so. She liked to dabble in music, back in the day, play the guitar and sing along. We had a Wollensak tape recorder, we would record her singing and family conversations and things like that. In her later years she would listen to it, it’s kind of like looking at an old photo album- listening to old recordings and things like that. I think we still have the tape recorder downstairs in her apartment, so, we can listen to the old conversations because, back-back in the 50s and 60s a tape recorder was kind of novel, not like nowadays you can record something on your phone and… This tape recorder, big, heavy, lunky thing you’d have to drag out, plug it in, set the reels up. It was a process.
