One Door Down : Profiles from a New York City Apartment Building During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Mary's Last Trip Transcript

George: She enjoyed living in New York. Living and growing up here you think, this is pretty much the way the whole world is. But when you get out, the world is different, it’s so vast and huge. Mary liked to travel, that was one of her favorite pastimes. It’s always fun to travel with somebody else; she would travel with her friends, she would like to do cruises, Hawaii, and Tahiti, along the Rheine in Germany, and also she did a trip uh from Moscow to St. Petersburg on the canals and rivers there. I like to travel too, Kathy and I would like to go on vacations, but at some point in time we were unable to leave Mary alone. So for a number of years we really hadn’t taken any significant vacations. The last trip we did take, this was Mary’s last long trip, August of 2017, there was a place in Tennessee that we went when they had the total eclipse. A total solar eclipse is… a really unique experience. You can see the-the solar flares dispensing from the sun, and you can see actually the mountains of the moon. The moon blocking the earth, everything becomes very dark and you can even see stars during the day, yanno, bright stars but, uh. And-and its unusual, the animals will be nesting in trees and the wind changes. It-it-it’s quite an experience. And uh, we went to Luray Caverns, Roanoke, Virginia, we stopped off in Kentucky at Colonel Sanderd’s Original Kentucky Fried Restaurant. (Chuckling) Mary was a little confused but she enjoyed herself.
