One Door Down : Profiles from a New York City Apartment Building During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Uwvie Recalls His Long(er) Walk Home Transcript

Uwvie: I work as a direct service provider, the sort of people who work in group homes, with these two separate people. The person who has intellectual disabilities, I was able to work with him directly and go to his house every day. For the other person, his mom immediately swooped down and brought him back to the home. When I was first going I remember being really freaked out, I could get on the train with like four people and I’m like “okay well, yanno, I know there’s a pandemic and everything I’m-I’m okay I’ll keep our shit together.” But then the 4-train, weirdly enough, no one gave a fuck at all about the pandemic. It’d only be like coming home like in the evening rush, but it was just packed. So then I started walking from my job to 59th street to just avoid that. It was a really nice experience, no one’s outside, and yanno New York is just beautiful when there’s nobody out there. Like the city would be so great if we could just get rid of the people!
