One Door Down : Profiles from a New York City Apartment Building During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Paul and Sonia Think About The Impact Gaming Has Had On Their Customers Transcript

Paul: So one of the interesting things is, for a large number of the people that I encounter daily, a larger part of their lives has returned to normal through gaming, through being at the store and being social with others, and, yanno reduced but yanno, we’re- it’s still able to happen.

Tyler: Mhm.

Paul: So, I think it’s a little bit of a unique situation where the whole sense of uncertainty is a lot less for the people that come to the store, and for me because there is no real difference between 2019 and today, with the exception of now they’re wearing masks and they can’t get close to other people, physically.

Tyler: I’m wondering if anyone has communicated to you how gaming has impacted their lives during the pandemic.

Sonia: I started working at his store ‘cuz I had to shut down my practice for a while. So I was working there at the register a couple days a week, and, I would have, not immediately like I started working there in May of 2020 but as-as we started going into winter, I would get people come in just like begging us to have events again. People were really lonely! Um, people who are into gam- people who live by themselves who didn’t have anybody to play with or maybe their partner didn’t play games and-and they didn’t have anyone to play with. They really… really needed it… Sometimes people would get mad, even, they’d be like “why aren’t you-why aren’t you having events yet? These other places are!” And then on the other hand we also had a number of couples who would come in and we actually, made a section of the store for two player games. Which is still there, now, because that was also a big thing for a while if you were just with your roommate or partner at home.

Paul: Yeah oddly we didn’t have a two player section pre-pandemic.

Tyler and Sonia: (Simultaneously) Yeah.

Sonia: And probably will continue to have that for a while…

Paul: Yeah probably.

Sonia: So I definitely also had multiple couples come in and they’d be buying an expansion for a game and they’d say “this game got us through the pandemic.” Like that’s, multiple people (Tyler: Yeah.) would come in and say that, so. Yeah…

Paul: I agree.

(Shared laugh)

Tyler: How does that make you feel?

Sonia: It made me feel really good to hear that, yanno as-a-as much as, yanno it’s a retail store I get it it’s not like we’re running a non-profit here or anything but it’s still nice to know that we are providing a service in a way for-for people.

Tyler: Yeah.

Sonia: Um, and yanno adding a-a bright spot to their lives.

Paul: Yeah I remember at one point I was like “Are we an essential service?” (Sonia and Paul laugh) I don’t know if you remember me asking that…

Sonia: I do! (laughs)

Paul: I was… Yeah… I was… not serious but not not serious.
