Leeat Discusses What It Was Like Going To Her Prenatal Appointments Alone Transcript
Leeat: So 2019, we started thinking about, having a kid.
Tyler: Mhm.
Leeat: Kids always terrified me. (laughing) Still not sure I’m not scared even though I own one of those now. (Shared laugh) Um… I think you asked me in terms of going through the process in COVID and if that made a difference… Doctors’ appointments. There were all these restrictions. All the initial ultrasounds, the first time we heard-I heard a heartbeat, the first time… I saw him, on an ultrasound moving and stuff, Uwvie wasn’t allowed with me. Uwvie wasn’t allowed with me for any of the appointments where I saw Oliver on like this little screen, and you could see his little heart moving and can see him growing. Up until six months, you start hearing the heart beat at seven weeks, Uwvie wasn’t allowed with me on any of the appointments, because of COVID. So I had to either bring him pictures or try and record videos of him while I go through this, which kinda takes away from my personal experience, right? ‘Cuz if you see things through a screen or through a lens it’s not the same as if you were actually seeing them with no barriers. It was, I think it was hard for him because, not only am I carrying the kid I have a lot more, connection because I go through all of this, and he tagged along at six months. I felt really sad for him, ‘cuz I was like “oh my god this is amazing!” and he was like “yeah, it look-it looks cute.” If you can’t be there in that room and feel it, you go “yeah, yanno, it’s just a heartbeat I’ve heard it a million times. When you’re there… and you hear, your child’s heartbeat for the first time… It’s all the bullshit that people tell you, like it’s all the cliches. You will tear up, “you’ll go “oh my god this is–“ like it’s a person it is a little person. And with every ultrasound, you see the little person grow. And you see a little hand, and then you see a little face. It’s insane… And so, Uwvie wasn’t there up until he was… a person. I resented the hospital for not letting him come to any of the appointments. Yanno I thought it was dumb. ‘Cuz I was like “he’s the partner. Like let him-let him see his kid how can you prevent a parent from experiencing that?” But they did. So… Here we are.
