One Door Down : Profiles from a New York City Apartment Building During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Jo Explains Her Relationship With New York City Transcript

Tyler: Have you developed a close relationship with the city, would you say?”

Jo: Yeah absolutely. Part of my job in public relations is to be very social. So I was at a lot of events and, I was hardly ever in this apartment. Literally to crash, that was it. And then I was out eighteen hours of the day (laughing.) And yeah, I absolutely adored the city, I mean a lot of people have a love-hate with New York, right, it’s kind of “oh god, can’t stand all the people” or yanno “a lot of the tourists walk five abreast and, can’t get around them,” all that sort of thing. But, honestly, adored the city and that’s why, I stayed. Because I really connected with it. Like, I love living here, I love being able to think “oh my god, I want Pakistani food at 4 AM,” or whatever you know you could probably find it. My connection to the city is largely cultural, so it’d be food or art in particular. Like, I’m a huge museum-goer I love the MET, like I mourned not going to the MET during COVID that was so sad because I used to go literally twice a month and not doing that was so sad. So yeah, I have a, I have a pretty strong connection with New York. I do like leaving it though, (shared laugh) I do like leaving it, and then coming back and being horrified by it for like 24 hours, and then I’m like “Ah yeah no I love it!” (laughs)
