One Door Down : Profiles from a New York City Apartment Building During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Jo Discusses Leaving New York Transcript

Jo: When it became very clear that New York was going to lock down completely, that’s when I really wigged out. At the time I was dating a guy who had moved to Austin, Texas in January 2020. And I was talking to him and I was like “I’m really scared of being alone during this.” And he’s like “Get on a plane.”

I recall that sort of lead up to it where I was talking to Kathy and George downstairs, I was like “I really want to just get out of New York right now, but I can’t take my cat, Ygritte.” Kathy was like “don’t worry about Ygritte we’ve got her, bring her down here.” She gave me a uh, an N95 mask because she was still working at the hospital at that point. Taught me how to use it, and she’s like “don’t touch your face,” and all of those things we took for granted so many months later she was telling me all up front like yanno “wash your hands a-as much as you can,” and “I’m going to give you hand sanitizer,” and all of these things I’d never even thought of.

The day I travelled to Texas, got into an uber, and the driver turns around to me and he says “why are you going to the airport?” And I said “um, I just need to get out of here.” And he goes “are there even flights going out of New York today?” and I said “well as far as I know! (laughing) My flight hasn’t cancelled, so yes.” And he’s like “Okay.” The next day is when New York officially went lockdown.

It was the most bizarre feeling to be in that airport that day. There was no one there. It literally was empty, and, going through those turnstiles to the other side with the gates, and, oh! It was weird! There was probably, ten people on my flight? Empty rows, four ahead of me and four behind me. It was insane! But I knew I couldn’t stay here. I was too scared to stay here.
