One Door Down : Profiles from a New York City Apartment Building During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Jo and I Discuss Our Pandemic Relationships Transcript

Jo: Do you feel like your relationship suffered during COVID? And that’s why you broke up?

Tyler: It wouldn’t have happened (Jo: Mmm) if it wasn’t for COVID. (Bottle cap being removed) (Jo: Ahhh) Cuz… I had to move home to Pennsylvania where I met her… (Jo: Ahhh, okay, yes) and so… When we moved to Brooklyn, we hadn’t known each other very well (Jo: Yeah) and we both kinda knew what we were doing was like, not stupid, but… risky. (Jo: Risky, yeah…) And so, there wasn’t arguing per se, but it was just this, disconnect. (Jo: Yeah…) Once we moved to Pennsylvania, it got a lot better. (Jo: Yeah) and then when we moved back out, it, (Jo: did the same thing.) Yeah… (Jo: reverted, yeah, yeah.) Yeah, so… She broke up with me (Jo: Aww) on New Year’s Eve (Jo: Gasps) err… yeah… err… New Years, no no, you know it was weird cuz, it was New Year’s Day, it was like twelve… something…

Jo: (While laughing) So you know the time!

Tyler: And the fireworks were going off in the background (Jo: Gasps) and I was like “What is happening?!?” (Shared laugh) The fireworks are going off (Jo: Oh my gosh…) you can see them through the windows and I’m just crying… and… (Jo: Oh no!) It was like, ahh!

Tyler: I think that without her, I would’ve suffered. If I didn’t have someone to live with me (Jo: Yes!) and to go on the adventures that we went on, (Jo: Yeah!)  it like, it would have really sucked! (Jo: Yeah!) It would have been a lot worse, and now that we’re over, and, you know, it’s like, I’m thankful.

Jo: Yeah! A hundred percent, and it’s so funny you should say that, because, I’m also grateful for having, honestly, just s-someone to be with during, especially 2020. Like I had people that I was working with who were living alone, who became complete hermits. (Tyler: Yeah.) Like to the point where they didn’t leave their apartment at all. (Tyler: Mhm.) Like, not at all. (Tyler: Yeah…) And I was deeply concerned about them (Tyler: Mhm.) because I was like this is… not great. So, I think we were both lucky that we were in, you know, relationships that didn’t work out, but, to have experienced it with someone regardless of how the relationship… ended up… was… perhaps a little bit easier than people who spent it completely alone.

Tyler: Oh yeah, (Jo: Yeah.) No, I mean… like… I… It’s so weird. (Jo: Yeah.) It-it really is, cuz, yanno, having an ex, it’s like “Oh, that’s your ex.” (Jo: Yeah.) But they’re also someone that, in this situation, they’re also someone that did a service… that no one else could have.

Jo: Yeah!
