George and I Talk About My Being A Delivery Driver Transcript
George: Well, you still have your scooter?
Tyler: I do! It’s…
George: Oh, okay!
Tyler: it’s behind this couch.
George: The person who lived here before, when COVID came about, was a little uneasy about traveling on public transport, so he got a scooter and he used to commute to work in Maspeth.
Tyler: That’s a ride.
George: That’s a half hour ride; as fast as traffic moves in the city you can probably get around just as fast on a scooter (laughs.)
Tyler: Yeah, swervin’ in and out of lanes. Just… Yeah.
George: Just watch out for the potholes, you took a flight once.
Tyler: (Laughing) Yes I did! I forgot about that actually! The first day!
George: You’re like you didn’t get seriously injured.
Tyler: I really am… I don’t, I never really remember, like, the action of falling it’s always just like I was up and now I’m not. But…
George: Yeah, (Kathy laughs), it happens so fast, you don’t… (laughing)
Tyler: Yeah! And like, I went right over the handlebars, landed on my backpack, and that allowed me to just roll forward…
George: Oh, okay, oh my god.
Tyler: And, and so I scraped myself up a little bit but… That was a great fall! Uh… (Shared laugh)
George: I, I used to drive a motorcycle years ago and a friend of mine got seriously hurt where he broke some bones.
Tyler: They’re no joke, bike accidents
George: Inevitably an accident is gonna happen, (while laughing) with your scooter be extra careful.
Tyler: I’ve learned in delivering that, despite my disability, I’m super visual. I really depend on my sight to… (while laughing) my sight to be able to see things! As simple as that sounds!
George: To protect yourself, when you, (while laughing) don’t run into anything!
Tyler: (While laughing) Um, yeah…
Tyler: I’ve had to rely on that specific sense, and… Watching… the roads and looking behind you, and…
George: You have to be super aware of what’s going on.
Tyler: Yeah… And if I’m honest, I, I wear headphones and I listen to music while I ride and I shouldn’t do that at all.
George: That’s not good.
Tyler: I don’t know why I do that; I should stop.
George: When you’re, when you’re vulnerable, you have to be super aware.
Tyler: Yeah, I shouldn’t make myself more vulnerable
George: Right, exactly.
Tyler: Yeah.
